My first session of EPQ was today and it began with an introduction to all of the deadlines and what I need to have done by the time I hand the project in on the 1st December 2014 (my deadline!) and before I leave for Summer.
By the end of term:
By the end of Summer:
By December 1st:
After this time line was given to me I began to draft some title ideas after talking to my supervisor and other people which formed my initial title idea which is:
"Why was Alexander the Great given the title of 'great'?"
The positives of this title is that it doesn't constrain me to any particular topics but rather leaves me free to explore it in a number of different possible ways such as his actions and how he was thought of at the time and now. Another positive is that it is very clear in describing what the dissertation will be about; there is no ambiguity over who and what will be discussed as it is clearly mentioned which will give me a clear direction when writing it and anyone reading it an understanding from the start. However a negative of this title is that it repeats 'great' twice which means it jars when you say it and although it gives me depth to go into it another negative is that the question itself is very simple - why? This means my dissertation might turn out as just a ‘list’ of reasons and because of this nature of the question it does not really leave me room to develop much of a critical argument because it is easy to say why someone is great or not but I want to go further and say whether he truly deserved this title. I also want to question how much Alexander deserved the title of ‘great’ which will leave me with much more room for critical analysis so I may revise this title later.
Therefore I have set myself the task of finalising and improving my title by Friday 20th of June, the end of this week.
Now I have an initial - though not final - title my next step is to organise how I am going to complete this EPQ. Therefore I am going to sort out my long term planning for it, to do this I am going to explore different ways I can do this and learn ways I can to decide on how to do it and then make the long term plan.
By the end of term:
- Project Progression Report completed up to "what skills need to be applied to use the information you have collected?"
- Title Verification
- Long Term Plan
- Blog/reflective journal
- Reviewed bibliography of at least 10 sources
- Evidence of a practice presentation
By the end of Summer:
- Completed all the EPQ tasks on Moodle
- Mid Term project review
By December 1st:
- Written and handed in my dissertation
- Hand in everything with my EPQ
