Once again I have come across a problem because although my new draft which I have written some of is improved it still doesn't have the clarity of argument that I am pursuing, I believe now that my main problem is wanting to include to much. I need to decide what parts of his life are particularly relevant to my argument that he was great in the military sense as he was never defeated because of his superior tactics and psychological strategy in warfare. This means focusing less on examples of his early life which I believe can be placed in the opening of the dissertation as an introduction to his greatness which will follow him throughout his life and putting more of a focus on his main military career as king i.e. Persia, although to back up my points I may use examples from his suppression of rebellions in Greece and his Indian campaigns. The topic is too broad to be able to include everything and keep a coherent argument. Once again I am learning through doing and this will inform me even more about my future plans - the most important thing is clarity and coherency, if the reader doesn't know what is being argued it is not a good dissertation. I need a clear introductory sentence or paragraph explaining everything and then develop my argument - backed up with examples (rather than using examples of his life to create an argument which is what I think I have been doing) to reach a judgement by the end.
I am finding this all very good experience and once again I have a picture of a rough outline, this basically has laid out the argument and I have the examples I shall use surrounding it. The source quotes will be in my original plan which, as previously said, is basically a biography of Alexander's life so is very detailed. Hopefully my next attempt will be more successful.
