I found this section a lot easier to write than the previous one and I believe that is because I followed my own advice (see previous post):
I am glad that I did not face the problems I had with the first section to the same extent in this one and although I am having to balance my other college commitments with writing it because I was so clear on my argument, what I was writing (mainly because of the detail in my plan) I found it a much less stressful experience to write than earlier so I shall continue doing this with the next sections.
I was also worried about discerning between the military and generalship sections because they are based on a similar topic, however in reality I found that this wasn't so much of a problem because it was more into looking at Alexander as a person (General) than what he did (Military) and am satisfied that I didn't repeat any arguments and that my dissertation remains clear.
I am becoming aware of a potential issue which is that my sections are very long which I am wary of because if my dissertation is too long the argument might become too jumbled, lose clarity and not be very good. I don't think I will make a conscious decision to be wary of word count by cutting bits out just as yet in case I cut out something which is of value. I plan to write all of the main sections and keep them how they turn out regardless of word count and when I am done think about it then. This should mean that I will have a good overview of my entire dissertation and be in a better place to decide how I need to condense it if it does come to that.
I shall therefore continue writing my dissertation's other sections in the same way because it is working very well for me.
- I gathered all the sources before writing so I knew exactly what I was using and how they would fit into my argument, I didn't have to find any so writing it was easier and less broken up
- My plan was very detailed which meant I knew exactly what I was writing and why which made it very easy to write and I think of a better quality than it would've been without doing this because of how clear I was on what I was to write
- I made sure I was much clearer on what my argument was from the start which meant I could write smoothly with purpose
- Writing the topic sentences first focused my argument both in the individual paragraphs and the whole thing which made it clearer and a smoother read. Any ones which I found difficultly defining the argument - one on his relationship with his army - made me look again and rethink how I was doing it which meant that I made the necessary changes before I'd actually written any significant amount which was a great time saver
- I didn't listen to music because I worked in college on it mainly, I found that I was very focused so that advice was good
